Claudine V. Mason (1899-1993) Papers 1917-1986

The Claudine Mason Papers are arranged in one and one half-size boxes and include biographical materials, files relating to Mason's formal education, and correspondence. The biographical materials include a few biographical sketches, clippings about Mason's speaking engagements and her appointment to and retirement from Northwestern, and desk calendars recording her family, social, and organizational activities in Evanston in the 1940s. The education files consist primarily of lecture notes from Mason's undergraduate study. These notes are foldered alphabetically according to academic discipline. Among her teachers were Ralph Heilman, Horace Secrist, and Frederick Deibler in economics; Franklin Bliss Snyder in English; William V. Pooley and Arthur Guy Terry in history; Delton T. Howard and Robert Gault in psychology; and William Locy in zoology.

Claudine V. Mason was born on September 7, 1899, in Wingate, Indiana, the daughter of George W. and Edna Win (Phillips) Van Cleave. She earned her B.A. at Northwestern University in 1921. While a student, Mason was president of the sophomore class, a member of the student council, and was active in the YWCA and Shi Ai, the junior women's honorary society. Karl Fredric Putnam was born March 28, 1879, to a prominent family in Mt. Carmel, Illinois–banker and attorney Samuel R. Putnam and Agatha Weinbach Putnam. Karl attended the Northwestern University Academy (preparatory school), graduating on June 13, 1899.
